Annual Report

Annual Report

Jefferson National Parks Association is pleased to present our report to the community. The report provides summary information about the Association's programs and key accomplishments over the last year and describes our activities in support of our beloved national parks, public lands and historic sites. This year the Association provided significant support to our agency partners, sponsoring programs and projects valued at $1 million. On behalf of our board, staff and partners, we express our appreciation for the community's involvement and encouragement.

Major Accomplishments
The year was marked by the addition of new locations, new educational offerings, and special celebrations. Included among them are: the 40th anniversary of the completion of the Gateway Arch; the publication of a new landmark book on the Gateway Arch; the opening of an expanded bookstore at Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site; and the opening of a new bookstore at Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site.

Jefferson National Expansion Memorial
As the centerpiece of JNPA’s operations, this site exists to commemorate the role of St. Louis in the westward expansion of the United States in the 1800’s. Throughout the year, JNPA provided critical operating and financial support for this site which includes the world renowned Gateway Arch and the Old Courthouse, site of the first Dred Scott trials. JNPA played a key role in the 40th anniversary celebration of the completion of the Gateway Arch along with the NPS and Metro. JNPA’s newly published book The Old Courthouse won a national award in 2005. In addition, JNPA published The Gateway Arch: An Architectural Dream a visually stunning book that chronicles the establishment of Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and the construction of the Gateway Arch.

Ulysses S. Grant
JNPA has been a proud partner of Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site in St. Louis County since the early 1990’s. In the past year we opened a new bookstore in the newly completed visitor center at the site. Our inventory selection of educational products related to Ulysses and Julia Grant has been dramatically expanded with the additional floor space.

Mississippi National River and Recreation Area
When visitors come to the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul, they have the opportunity to visit the Mississippi River Visitor Center. This center, staffed by National Park Service Interpretive Rangers, is the single source for the best information and JNPA products related to the history, culture, commerce and environment of the Mississippi River.

Lewis and Clark - Yankton
The Lewis and Clark Visitor Center along the South Dakota and Nebraska border features a JNPA bookstore that funds the programs and work of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and National Park Service in telling the history of Lewis and Clark and the Missouri River.

Lewis and Clark – Hartford
Known locally as Camp River Dubois at the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site in Hartford, IL, this site tells the story of Lewis and Clark and their pre-expedition planning that took place in Illinois, north of St. Louis. Proceeds from the visitor center’s Store of Discovery this year supported the work of the Lewis and Clark Society of America at the site.

National Great Rivers Museum
At the National Great Rivers Museum in East Alton, Illinois we are pleased to operate the Confluence Store for the benefit of the Army Corps of Engineers. Available products educate visitors about this unique part of the world where three major rivers join. Proceeds from the Confluence Store this year supported the work of the Meeting of the Rivers Foundation at the site.

Little Rock Central High School
JNPA is pleased to have been invited to support Little Rock Central High National Historic Site, location of the famous desegregation crisis of 1957. We began supporting this site in January 2005, continuing the good work of Central High Museum, Inc. in the operation of the visitor center’s bookstore. JNPA is pleased to participate in the planning of a new visitor center that will open in conjunction with the 50th anniversary commemoration in 2007.
