2009 FREE Teacher Workshop: Arch Reflections
October 28, 2009 will mark the 44th anniversary of the final section of the Gateway Arch being put into place. In addition to the public event in the Visitor Center under the Gateway Arch on October 24 the National Park Service is hosting a FREE Teacher Workshop from 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
At this workshop, participants will take a look back at how the Gateway Arch came to be. The National Park Service Historian, Dr. Bob Moore, and archivist, Jennifer Clark, will provide information about the buildings and community that existed along the riverfront before it was cleared to make way for the memorial. Additionally, participants will view primary sources from the park's archives relating to the 1947 architectural competition to determine the memorial's design.
Lastly, we will meet with a few of the Gateway Arch builders and workers and hear their first-hand stories as well as have an opportunity to ask them questions.
The workshop will feature primary source documents, suggested student activities, and lesson plans. Participants will park in the Gateway Arch garage, meet at the Old Courthouse at 8:30 and the workshop will end at the Gateway Arch.
Teachers also have the opportunity to join the Partner of the Parks Membership which provides 15% discounts in the 5 St. Louis Metro Area Museum Stores and online as well as hundreds of park stores across the country with great educational products and materials. Members enjoy these discounts as well as local St. Louis business discounts throughout the year and invitations to exclusive events and a FREE gift. Memberships start at $35. A Member-only Private Lunch with the Builders will begin at the Spaghetti Factory on October 24th at 1:30.
