In 1931, at the age of 46 and in poor health, Steve left the city life and bought an island in Namakan Lake, now in Voyageurs National Park. The 400- acre island was the former headquarters of the Virginia & Rainy Lake Lumber Company. Steve used the facilities as a resort. Although the resort closed in 1959, Steve continued to entertain friends and family until he left Pine Cove.
Throughout the years, he kept notes about his activities on the island. In 1976, he compiled and typed those notes in diary format. They were donated to the Voyageurs National Park museum in 1980. Steve compiled his notes for this period as yearly memoranda. The excerpts selected are shown as they appear in his typewritten notes. They are humorous, insightful, and full of honesty. Celebrate with us the history of I.W. Stevens.
