The Great American West tells the story of America's western frontier from 1803 to 1890. Using the stories and words (from diaries and letters) of real life people, this film shows not only the astonishingly beautiful territory, but also the true and often heart-wrenching stories of those who risked everything to inhabit and explore it.
This film chronicles the major events that contributed to exploration, commerce, and homesteading on the western frontier, beginning with the Louisiana Purchase and ending in 1890 when the U.S. Census Bureau declared that there was no more frontier.
