Fruit butters did not have any butter in it. Pioneer women boiled fruit with cider until the mixture was about as thick as butter. This process usually took all day. Butters made from apples or other fruits and stored in tightly sealed jars, lasted throughout the winter. Pioneer women made fruit spreads such as apple butter, pumpkin butter, peach butter and plum butter.
